What is Gut Microbiota?

Your child's gastrointestinal microbiota, also known as gut flora or gut microbiota, are the microorganisms that live in the digestive tracts of humans. A healthy gut flora = 80% good bacteria which is the key to good health. Scientific studies have shown that poor intestinal health due to an imbalanced gut flora (usually dominated by pathogenic bad bacteria) is the main cause of many chronic health problems.

Examples of the problems associated with poor gut health

Unhealthy weight - Obesity, Overweight
Loose Stool - Clear sign of poor bowel health
Poor Immunity - Fall sick regularly
Poor skin condition - Acne, Eczema, Skin flares
Poor mental health - Lethargic, tired regularly, difficulty remembering
Irregular Bowels - Difficulty moving bowels, Poor digestive health
Stomach Discomfort - Pain in stomach
Bad Breath - Especially in the mornings, built up of bad bacteria

Lifestyle that can destroy your child's good bacteria

Our Everyday Lifestyle can cause havoc to our health

  • High sweet intake - Can cause bad bacteria to repopulate faster
  • Lack of sleep, rest and increase stress - Affects microbial diversity
  • Lack of fibre - Most kids do not like a high fibre diet, and probiotics thrive on prebiotics (High fibre)
  • Frequent use of antibiotics - Destroys all good and bad bacteria, affects the gut flora diversity greatly
  • Pollution, artificial food colourings, tainted food sources - alter the gut microbial diversity
  • Chlorinated, Unfiltered water with chemicals - can affect microbial balance of bacteria
  • GMO food - Highly popular chemical which farmers spray on their GMO crops, glyphosate can negatively impact bacteria in the gut. eg. procssed foods - chicken nuggets, fries, cheesy puffs, etc

Probiotics is key to a Healthy Gut Microbiota

How does probiotics help you to achieve a healthy gut flora?

Probiotics are friendly, good beneficial bacteria that provide health benefits to the host. When consumed in adequate amounts, they can improve the health of your digestive tract, restore the good bacteria and repopulate more in your gut to replace the bad bacteria that live along your gastrointestinal walls. Without good bacteria, bad bacteria will occupy the intestinal walls and colonise.

Probiotics also help the body to absorb nutrients and vitamins better. It eliminates toxic compounds from the digestive tract. Replenishing the right and good type of probiotics is highly important to maintain a good gut flora.

"It's less about the billions of probiotics but actually how many of the billions do survive and actually reach your gut to repopulate".

Lactomin and Lactokids was designed and formulated with the right balance of the right strains at the right levels for digestion and immune health." A complete and holistic kids probiotics.

Eczema or Atopic Dermatitis

Children with atopic dermatitis show clinical improvement after lactobacillus exposure.
The effects of L.paracasei (LP) and L.fermentum (LF), when used in combination, showed the supplementation resulted in clinical improvement in children with AD. The FDLQI and CDLQI scores were lower in the LP, LF mixture group than in placebo group (p=0.02 and 0.03). In subgroup analysis, SCORAD scores significantly decreased after probiotic treatment especially in children younger than age 12. This shows, Lactokids + has a positive effect on AD, and helps to prevent and relieve AD in children.

Probiotics Made Specially for Infants and Kids

Childhood is a time of constant development, and as parents we do our best to encourage the healthy growth of our kids. We give them fruits for their fibre, fish for their brain and milk for their bones, but did you know how important it was to establish a healthy digestive and immune system at a young age?

A child’s digestive and immune system is established during the first few years of their life, with the majority of this development happening within the digestive tract. As a child grows, through the development stages, their digestive system has to adapt to changes in diet, stomach bugs, and even minor fluctuations like when they consume too much sugar or salt.

All these changes can result in occasional digestive upset. That is why introducing healthy bacteria into the body at an early stage is an important and positive step for the digestive and immune health of your child.

What are the benefits of supplementing your kid with Lactokids?

By supplementing your kids a probiotic supplement like Lactokids, you’re introducing good bacteria into their gastrointestinal tract. Taken every day, this good bacteria helps maintain the natural balance in your child’s digestive and immune system, allowing their bodies to function properly and support their general well-being.

Powerful benefits of Bifidobacterium probiotic strain (In Lactomin/ Lactokids / Lactocran)

Recently in 2021, some interesting data have emerged regarding gut health and SARS COV-2 infections.

It is known that children for the most part have healthier guts than adults. The initial hypothesis focused on what in particular afforded children this protection.

They found significant data linking the gut microbiome to this Immuno-protection. Children’s gut microbiome differs slightly from adults.

We all know the benefits of probiotics and many practitioners recommend that probiotics contain a particular species called Bifidobacterium. Well, it turns out that children have much higher levels of Bifidobacterium in their guts than adults do.

This species actually constitutes the major gut microbe present in children under the age of 10.

These levels begin to decrease as we age and are very low in the elderly and adults with certain conditions such as obesity and diabetes. A comparison of Bifidobacterium concentrations in the gut of children ranges from 60-80% compared to 20-40% in adults and less than 10% in the elderly with some high-risk groups as low as 1%.

Bifidobacterium has been investigated extensively in previous studies and has been found to provide specific benefits to the immune system and in modulating immune cell mediators.

They discovered that many of the immune signaling mediators and pathways were the same ones affected in severe SARS COV-2 infections. Interestingly enough, although Bifidobacterium levels decline with age, when posed with an infection or perceived intruder to the body, these pro-inflammatory mediators lead to a hyper exaggerated immune response which leads to tissue damage.

In these high-risk individuals, the immune system overreacts, leading to severe illness. Bifidobacterium has been shown to down-regulate Interleukin-6 levels and actually increase certain anti-inflammatory markers.

Bifidobacterium thus represents a very viable and low-risk option for prevention and building up immunity for the individual.

Choose a probiotic with the powerful probiotic immuno effect of bifidobacterium.

How good a probiotic is not in the count but in survivability of strains

The survival of probiotics in nature are highly vulnerable to many factors from temperature, humidity to stomach acids. Little is communicated to consumers about survivability. Alot of communication is on which probiotic has more count in billions compared to another, and you will think more is better. However think again. You can consume a 100 billion count probiotic and only absorb less than 2% of the 100 billion into your gut.

Why? Simply the probiotics are non-protected and 98% of the strains would have never made it pass the stomach. Other factors include temperature and humidity. 59% of probiotic strains would have been killed in storage conditions, temperature fluctuations, humidity, etc... Even probiotics in capsules, are supposed to stay in their capsules. However when capsules are opened to consume the contents, the moment the capsule is open, the lactic acid bacteria is exposed and immediately dies.

Did you know the intestinal tract is as long as a double decker bus! Can you imagine without protection, the probiotic strains will never have made it to the intestines or through the intestinal walls.

Lactokids has a unique SPCC double microencapsulation protective system, which is patented and protects every single strain from temperature, humidity, to stomach acidic conditions. It can withstand storage temperatures of up to 33 Degrees. Wheras most probiotic brands have to be stored at or below 25 degrees. In hot and humid Singapore, or South East Asia, it is almost impossible to store below 25 degrees, unless refrigerated or temperature controlled.

With SPCC Double coating, consisting of 1st and 2nd encapsulation followed by a unique matrix barrier to further protect the probiotic strains. The uniquely safe and natural protective layer is formed by organic properties only. The SPCC microencapsulation acts as a physical barrier to protect the probiotic strains from harsh conditions of the body as well as environmental stress. Releasing the probiotic strains in the strategic areas of the intestines, assures optimal delivery of strains and increase the rate of intestinal colonisation and keeps the intestinal walls healthy.

Lactokids SPCC Double Protective Coating

Research has shown the intestinal survival rate for Lactokids Probiotics after a 30 days duration at 37 degree celcius, achieves above 90% viability. As compared to probiotics without any protection with viability of less than 50%. This is very important as it determines the efficacy and viability of the probiotics. Lactokids high survival rate ensures optimal delivery of the strains to the small intestines to ensure optimal proliferation of strains in the intended intestinal areas.

Change in PH environment and SPCC Protection

The nature of probiotics are highly vulnerable to change in PH environment. However with SPCC double protection, research has shown the change of PH does not affect the protective layer on the probiotic strain. At PH 2.4 (which is the environment in the stomach), the probiotic is unaffected due to the protective layers protecting the strain. As it travels into the intestinal area, at Ph 6.8, the coating is gradually dissolved, releasing the probiotics and ensuring high stability and efficacy. This is why Lactokids produces positive results and ensures a high effective rate.

SPCC Double Protection Coating under magnification

SPCC Double Coating is a patented eco-friendly coating technique designed to revolutionise the survivability of probiotics through rigiously tested protective coating, hence protecting the probiotic against temperature, moisture and pressure. This ensures the probiotic strain reaches the intestines live, and are unaffected by gastric acid and bile acid.

At the same time, a SPCC Double Coating has superb acid resistance properties, which support active proliferation of probiotics by promoting probiotics not to be dissolved by gastric acid and to precisely react to changes in pH, dissolving well in small intestines when being close to neutral.

Series I Clinical Studies Program

Documented Series I For Series One Clinical Studies Patients taking part in the clinical trials stopped using other drugs such as antibiotics, hormones, adsorbents, astringents or lubricants before the trials began. Effect of the microbe composition of this invention on treating diarrhea and constipation. 540 patients (inc adults and children) The total effective rate for the test group was 97.5% From the results of the clinical trials. it can be concluded: The microbe composition of this invention is effective in treating various kinds of diarrhea.

This invention provides a microbe composition comprising of Lactobacillus acidophilus, Bifidobacterium and Streptococcus faecalis. The combination of three bacterium strains has an advantage over a single bacterium strain preparation since each of the three bacterium strains has its characteristics and specialized roles and is synergetic with each other.

Third Series Clinical Studies Program

Expanded program for further clinical studies

Conducted at 80 hospitals in Beijing and Shanghai further tested the efficacy of the microbe composition in 1,321 patients inc 866 adults and 455 children. Treatment of constipation was conducted on 94 adults and 61 children, the total marked effective rate was 77.5% and 88.5% respectively.

Improvement on atopic dermatitis for children

Children with atopic dermatitis show clinical improvement after Lactobacillus exposure.

To assess the effects of Lactobacillus paracasei (LP) and Lactobacillus fermentum (LF), and their mixture on the disease severity, quality of life, and immune biomarkers of children with AD.

A double-blind, prospective, randomized placebo-controlled study was conducted on 220 children aged 1-18 years with moderate-to-severe AD (Trial number: NCT01635738). The children were randomized to receive LP, LF, LP + LF mixture, and placebo for 3 months. Changes in severity scoring of atopic dermatitis (SCORAD), Family Dermatology Life Quality Index (FDLQI), and Children's Dermatology Life Quality Index (CDLQI) scores in the different groups and at different visits were evaluated.

Skin prick tests, levels of IgE, IFN-γ, IL-4, TGF-β, and TNF-α, and urine biomarkers were also evaluated. Children who received LP, LF, and LP + LF mixture showed lower SCORAD scores than the placebo group (P < 0.001), and this difference remained even at 4 months after discontinuing the probiotics. The FDLQI and CDLQI scores were lower in the LP, LF, and LP + LF mixture group than in the placebo group (P = 0.02 and 0.03). IgE, TNF-α, urine eosinophilic protein X, and 8-OHdG levels decreased, whereas IFN-γ and TGF-β increased in the probiotic groups, but these did not reach statistical significance except for IL-4 (P = 0.04).

In subgroup analyses, SCORAD scores significantly decreased after probiotic treatment especially in children younger than age 12, with breastfeeding > 6 months, and with mite sensitization (P < 0.001).

Supplementation of a probiotic mixture of LP and LF is associated with clinical improvement in children with AD.

Clin Exp Allergy. 2015 Apr;45(4):779-87. doi: 10.1111/cea.12489. https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/25600169/

A randomized formula controlled trial of Bifidobacterium lactis and Streptococcus thermophilus for prevention of antibiotic-associated diarrhea in infants.

This clinical trial was carried out to determine whether oral treatment with a commercial probiotic formula containing Bifidobacterium lactis and Streptococcus thermophilus would reduce the frequency of antibiotic-associated diarrhea (AAD) in infants.

There was a significant difference in the incidence of AAD in the children receiving probiotic-supplemented formula (16%) than nonsupplemented formula (31%).

Immune modulatory effects of probiotic Streptococcus thermophilus on human monocytes

Commensal bacteria and probiotics have made their entry to the mainstream of healthcare and contribute to immune homeostasis in the gastrointestinal tract as well as conferring beneficial immunomodulatory properties that assist in the maintenance of a healthy immune system.

We assessed the immune modulatory effects of ST on human monocytes and demonstrated that it delivers a range of potential immunomodulatory and anti-inflammatory properties.

The data exhibits a predominant anti-inflammatory profile of cytokine, chemokine and cell markers induced by ST.Therefore, the use of ST may be an efficacious approach for the treatment of select autoimmune diseases without using broad immunosuppression caused by currently available treatments for autoimmune disorders.

Supplementary work is required to determine whether ST bacteria displays similar anti-inflammatory effects in vitro and in vivo in compromised immune disorders/ models such as inflammatory bowel disease, multiple sclerosis and allergies.

Bifidobacterium Longum: Protection against Inflammatory Bowel Disease

IBD is generally associated with the change of the immune system and gut microbiota, and the conventional treatments usually result in some side effects.

Bifidobacterium longum, as colonizing bacteria in the intestine, has been demonstrated to be capable of relieving colitis in mice and can be employed as an alternative or auxiliary way for treating IBD.

Here, the mechanisms of the Bifidobacterium longum in the treatment of IBD were summarized based on previous cell and animal studies and clinical trials testing bacterial therapies.

Many clinical trials have shown that using Bifidobacterium longum can effectively improve the symptoms of IBD.

Evaluating the encapsulation of the lactic acid bacteria in simulated gastrointestinal conditions. (SPCC Clinical Study, Lactokids strains, Korea)

This study aimed to evaluate the viable stability of probiotic bacterial cells (Lactobacillus plantarum, Lactobacillus fermentum, Streptococcus thermophilus, Lactococcus lactis and Enterococcus faecium) that were coated with SPCC by comparing their resistance in simulated intestinal fluid (with pancreatin) and simulated gastric fluid (with pepsin) in vitro with that of the non-coated free cells.

The results showed that the SP coated cells exhibited considerably greater resistance to the simulated gastric fluid than the activated cells (p <0.001), showing that the SP coating may enhance the survival of probiotic bacteria after consumption during their transit through the GI tract after freeze-drying process.

The viability of SPCC coated cells was significantly higher (p < 0.001) than that of the activated non-coated cells. ( Refer to table 1). The average survival rate of the activated non-coated free cells was 50-60% after 4 h of exposure. In contrast, the SP coated cells showed a higher survival rate (96-99%) (Table 1).

All SPCC coated freeze-dried cells were significantly higher than that of the activated non-coated cells in survival rate (96-99.9%) (Table 2).

Morphological characterization of cells by scanning electron microscopy

The scanning electron microscope photomicrographs showed the appearance of the freeze-dried cells (Fig. 1).

SPCC encapsulation formed thin layers of embedded bacterial cells and showed a smooth surface structure (Fig. 1c). In contrast, non coated free cells showed a porous rough surface (Fig. 1a and b)

The majority of tested SPCC probiotic bacteria were found to be more resistant to simulated gastrointestinal conditions than that of activated non-coated. Our results were consistent with studies of cell coating technology that discovered the increased survival of probiotic bacteria under acidic conditions. SPCC encapsulation formed thin layers of embedded bacterial cells and showed a smooth surface structure (Fig. 1c).

In contrast, non-coated free cells showed a porous rough surface (Fig. 1a and b). Our results agree with other studies which observe the encapsulated matrix type of SPCC encapsulation. The variations in microstructures in encapsulated cells can be attributed to the differences in viscoelastic and film forming characteristics of each wall material.

Encapsulation could block direct contact between bacterial cells and harsh gastrointestinal environments. The capsule that encloses the probiotic bacterial cells dissolves over time, helping to settle bacteria in human intestinal tract.
